How Long Does It Take to Get Cited by ChatGPT? We Timed It
Median time to a ChatGPT citation is 6.81 days. We published this page, pinged IndexNow, and are timing every step live. 14 hours in: submitted, not yet served.
Founder, Sapience
Quick answer: The largest public measurement puts the median at 6.81 days from publish to first ChatGPT citation. The often-repeated fast path — IndexNow gets Bing to serve a page within hours, and ChatGPT reads Bing — is a claim we are testing live on this page, and 14 hours in, Bing has not served it yet. Every step is timestamped below, across six different domains.
Why are there two different answers?
Getting cited by ChatGPT happens in two stages that run on two different clocks. Stage one is retrieval: your page has to exist in the index ChatGPT searches, which for most queries means Bing plus OpenAI's own OAI-SearchBot crawl. That stage is marketed as hours; our measurement below is testing whether that holds. Stage two is selection: ChatGPT has to quote your page instead of a rival's, and that depends on competition, structure, and freshness. That stage is measured in days.
You can push stage one. Bing accepts IndexNow submissions and typically crawls a submitted URL within minutes. There is no equivalent push lane into OpenAI's own crawler; OAI-SearchBot finds pages through sitemaps and links on its own schedule. In practice, Bing coverage is the door in, which is why the whole game for a new page is getting into Bing fast.
What do the measured studies say?
Three public measurements put real numbers on the citation window. The median sits near seven days, the tail stretches past a month, and ChatGPT moves slower than the other answer engines but holds its citations longer once they land.
- Profound's analysis by Josh Blyskal measured a 6.81-day median from publish to first ChatGPT citation, with a maximum of 37 days. Miss the window and the model settles on another source.
- Semrush's study of how fast AI platforms cite new content found ChatGPT takes longer to cite new pages than Perplexity or Google AI Overviews, but its citations persist once earned, and new pages keep getting added over time.
- DerivateX's summary of the same Semrush dataset reports that only 42% of newly published pages earned a ChatGPT citation within 30 days.
Those medians average across every kind of query. A page chasing a contested head term can wait months or never get picked. A page that is the only precise answer to a narrow question can get cited the first time anyone asks it after Bing indexes the page, which can be the same day.
The live experiment: this page's own timeline
This page practices what it claims. It was written as a direct answer to one question, published to a domain with almost no authority (trysapience.com is three weeks old in the backlink indexes, with 3 referring domains), and pushed to Bing through IndexNow the same hour. No backlinks, no promotion. If it shows up in ChatGPT, structure and indexing speed did the work, and the timeline below is the proof.
- Published: August 4, 2026, 5:42 PM CT
- IndexNow submission to Bing: August 4, 5:43 PM CT — one minute after publish (HTTP 202, key validated)
- Bing serving the page: NOT YET as of August 5, 8:00 AM CT — 14 hours and 17 minutes after submission
- First ChatGPT citation observed: pending (ChatGPT retrieval needs the page served by Bing first)
We widened the test overnight. Six domains we operate — this one (3 weeks old), plus five established client sites with months of history and real backlinks — each submitted a live, verified page through IndexNow between 5:43 PM and 9:24 PM CT on August 4. As of 8:00 AM on August 5, Bing serves none of the seven submitted URLs: zero for seven, at 10 to 14 hours elapsed. Whatever IndexNow's crawl speed is, serving is running on a much longer clock, uniformly, regardless of domain age or authority.
Each pending line gets replaced with a real timestamp as it lands, and the Updated date on this page moves only when a measurement does.
What does ChatGPT traffic look like once citations start?
Across five client sites where we run first-party attribution, AI assistants sent 314 of 106,374 sessions in the 90 days ending August 4, 2026, which is 0.30% of all traffic. ChatGPT alone accounted for 273 of those 314 sessions: 86.9% of everything the AI assistants referred. The share is small and moving fast; it tripled from 0.12% of sessions in June to 0.43% in early August.
The quality gap is the reason to care. In the same 90 days, 50.3% of AI-assistant sessions triggered a commercial key event (app-store clicks, affiliate claims, product signups) against 10.3% of organic-search sessions. A visitor who arrives from a ChatGPT answer converts at 4.9 times the rate of one who arrives from a Google result, because the model already did the qualifying before the click.
How do you shorten the citation window?
The fast path is mechanical. Every step below is checkable in an afternoon, and each one removes a specific reason an engine skips a page.
- Serve real HTML to the crawlers. GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, and ClaudeBot do not execute JavaScript; content that only appears after hydration does not exist to them. Verify with curl, never with a browser.
- Check the bot wall, not just robots.txt. A CDN that challenges GPTBot overrides a robots file that allows it. Fetch your page with the crawler's user-agent string and confirm a 200 with the full HTML.
- Ping IndexNow the minute the page is live. Submission is free and resubmitting after every edit is the intended use. Bing powers both ChatGPT retrieval and Copilot.
- Open with a self-contained answer of 40 to 70 words, and repeat that pattern under every heading. Engines quote passages, never pages; a passage must survive being lifted out alone.
- Use exact numbers. 6.81 days is quotable; 'about a week' is filler. Engines preferentially cite text they can check.
- Show a visible updated date and keep it honest. Recency is a query input: engines append the current year to the searches they run.
Two things measurably do not shorten the window: an llms.txt file, which engines rarely fetch, and rewriting pages in Markdown, which parsers do not reward. Skip both and spend the time on structure.
What slows a citation down?
Four blockers account for most pages that never get cited. A bot-management layer that 403s crawlers robots.txt invites in. Client-side rendering that hides the words from a no-JavaScript fetch. A head-term target where established domains already own the answer. And conflicting entity facts across the web, because an engine that cannot tell which version of your company is true declines to cite any of them. The first two are fixable in a day, and they are worth ruling out before blaming the content. Frequently asked questions
Does ChatGPT use Bing? Yes. ChatGPT search retrieval draws on Bing's index alongside OpenAI's own OAI-SearchBot crawl, and Microsoft Copilot runs on Bing directly. A page missing from Bing rarely appears in either. That makes Bing Webmaster Tools and IndexNow the two fastest levers for ChatGPT visibility.
How do I check whether ChatGPT can see my site? Fetch your page with GPTBot's user-agent string and confirm a 200 response with your full HTML in it, then search site:yourdomain.com on Bing. If both pass, ChatGPT can retrieve you; if either fails, no amount of content fixes it until the access does.
Does IndexNow work for ChatGPT? Indirectly, and it is the only push lane that exists. IndexNow feeds Bing, Bing feeds ChatGPT search and Copilot, and Google ignores the protocol entirely. Submitting a URL costs nothing, is idempotent, and typically gets the page crawled within minutes.
How long until ChatGPT knows my brand without searching? Months to a year. Search citations arrive in days because they come from a live index; the model's built-in knowledge updates only when new training runs absorb the public record about you, including review sites, Reddit, Wikipedia, and news. The two timelines are independent, and the search one is the only one you can push.
Do ChatGPT citations actually send traffic? Modest volume, unusual quality. In our 90-day attribution data, AI assistants drove 0.30% of sessions, and those sessions completed commercial key events at 4.9 times the rate of organic search. Judge the channel on conversions; on raw sessions it always looks small.
Is ChatGPT faster or slower than Google AI Overviews at citing new pages? Slower. Semrush's measurement found Perplexity and AI Overviews cite fresh pages sooner, while ChatGPT lags but keeps its citations once they land. If your page holds a citation in ChatGPT, it tends to stay in the answer set rather than churn out.
